Crews investigating cause of fire at Austin Landing hotel

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

MIAMI TWP. — UPDATE @ 12:58 p.m.:

Fire investigators are working to learn what caused a fire in a maintenance room at the Hilton Garden Inn at Austin Landing Monday.

“We’re not sure yet,” said Miami Valley Fire District Battalion Chief Glenn Jirka. “It looks to me that it was probably a piece of mechanical equipment in that room.”

Crews responded to the hotel around 11 a.m. after receiving a report of an automatic alarm.

“It appears the maintenance personnel on site hit it with a dry chemical and initially put out the fire,” Jirka said. “So our crews are concentrated on getting the floors back open and smoke out of the building so people can go back to their rooms.

The hotel was evacuated due to the alarm, but people were let back inside around noon.

“We’re doing our best right now to get some smoke out of some the upper areas because we don’t want people to be irritated by the smoke and cause and secondary health issues,” Jirka said.

There was little damage to the hotel.

“It looks like probably some air handling equipment is about the only thing that’s damaged,” Jirka said. “Outside of that it’s going to be more inconvenience and the smell of smoke because it did permeate into the building.”
