Abandoned Jefferson Twp. school building catches fire twice in 24 hours; crews investigate as suspicious

JEFFERSON TWP. — Fire crews say they are investigating suspicious circumstances after responding to an abandoned school building twice in the past two days on Knox Avenue.

Around 8:30 p.m. Jefferson Twp. fire crews responded to a reported fire inside an abandoned school building at 120 Knox Avenue, but it was not the first time they were dispatched to this location.

“Last night we had a structure fire here with two modular mobile trailers that use to be used as classrooms,” said Gregory Wilcox, Assistant Fire Chief for Jefferson Twp.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire that occurred inside the school building tonight without too many complications due to its small size.

“It is suspicious,” Wilcox said.

Investigators from both the sheriff’s office and the fire department responded to the scene.

No civilians or first responders were injured in the fire.

Mutual aid from Dayton, New Lebanon, Trotwood, and Jefferson Twp. responded to the scene.

Wilcox asks that those who live on Knox Avenue keep an eye out for anyone suspicious or anyone going in and out of the school building.
