Fire crews investigating cause of fire at abandoned school

JEFFERSON TWP. — Fire crews are investigating the cause of structure fire in Jefferson Township.

Initial scanner traffic indicated that crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Knox Avenue in Jefferson Township for reports of a structure fire just before 7:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Jefferson Twp. Fire Department’s Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Wilcox told News Center 7 that one of the modular classroom next to the abandoned school building caught fire. Fire spread from the northern most classroom to the one next to it.

Jefferson Twp., Dayton and Trotwood crews responded to the fire. Wilcox said they were able to make a “quick attack” to ensure that the school building itself was not affected.

No injuries were reported.

The school building did not have power running though it as it has not been used in a number of years.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
