House fire leaves 2 homes a total loss on South Hedges in Dayton

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 5:25 p.m.

Two houses on South Hedges Avenue are total losses, fire officials say.

Firefighters arrived on scene to a fully involved duplex; the fire encompassed the attic and rear of the building.

A vacant house to the right of the duplex was also significantly damaged and is uninhabitable.

District Chief Andrew Wiley told News Center 7 the nature of the fire created a challenge.

“It did take awhile to get this number of crews on scene, who basically needed to fight two fires at once,” Chief Wiley said.

The home to the right of the duplex sustained some damage, but is still livable.

One firefighter was sent to the hospital for heat exposure related issues. All firefighters are working to keep hydrated as they’re outside in the heat, Chief Wiley said.

All six residents of the duplex and single family home made it out safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
