Clark State to dedicate room in honor of fallen sheriff’s deputy

SPRINGFIELD — Clark State College will dedicate a room in honor of a fallen Clark County Sheriff’s deputy.

They will dedicate a room in the Brinkman Educational Center in honor of Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Yates, the school announced Tuesday.

He was shot and killed in a residence at the Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park during a standoff situation on July 24, 2022.

Both Deputy Yates and his wife, Tracy, both graduated from Clark State’s Peach Officer Academy.

“The college community stands with the Yates family and recognizes that Matt was a proud Clark State graduate,” said Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, president of Clark State. “We were unbelievably proud of him, as well. By naming a room in his memory and establishing a scholarship, we honor his legacy as an outstanding officer of the law.”

Tracy said following her husband’s passing, many people reached out wanting to contribute something to honor and celebrate the life of her husband, Deputy Yates, according to a Clark State spokesperson.

The Clark State Foundation established a scholarship to honor Deputy Yates and to support Clark State cadets pursuing a local law enforcement career.

The Yates Room dedication will be on June 20 in the fourth-floor conference room of the Clark State Brinkman Education Center at 4 p.m. on 100 South Limestone Street.
