Centerville High School hosts mock crash to warn students against drunk driving

CENTERVILLE — Centerville High School hosted a mock crash to show the dangers of drunk driving to their students Wednesday morning.

News Center 7 Reporter Xavier Hershovitz attended the mock crash to see how drunk driving can make a true impact on people.

Centerville High School used their football arena to stage the demonstration, which took months of prepping and planning.

“This is planned every 4 years, probably 4 or 5 months in advance,” Kyle Bosscher, senior student at the high school, said.

The simulation start shortly after prom with students on their way home after drinking. They are then involved in a head on crash.

Several students are injured in the crash with CareFlight flying in as part of the demonstration. A hearse also pulls up to the scene to handle a student who died.

“They see their friends there getting wheeled out on stretchers or dying, or getting arrested. I think that also has a big impact,” Bosscher claims.

“When you do drive, other people’s lives are in your hands,” Sydney Corpusik, a junior, said.

The simulation also includes a “drunk” student, who was behind the wheel, performing a field sobriety test. Following the test, they are then arrested.

“This can happen any day in any community,” Washington Township Fire Department’s Safety Education Specialist Scott Henry said. “At the end of the day, we want them to remember it. There’s going to be a what if in everybody’s life at some point, and hopefully this can stick with these students.”

By performing this simulation, emergency responders and students hope that it encourages smart and safe behavior.

“I do hope it opens a conversation,” Bosscher said.

“I hope that people can start making smarter decisions,” Corpusik stated.
