Vacant building’s roof collapses, drops debris into Xenia street

XENIA — Xenia police responded to a building in the first block of Hill Street after a caller reported that it had partially collapsed into the road early Wednesday morning.

The building where the roof collapsed had been unused except for storage for a long time, according to the owner Marc D. Miller.

Miller told our news crew that he had received a call from Xenia police that the building had collapsed and there were bricks in the road. He took police around the building and they cleaned the debris off the street.

No one was injured in the collapse.

The owner added that he had cleaned up the outside of the building last fall, and was considering putting it up for sale. However, he said that he had problems with vandals, which can make a building hard to sell.

In total, Miller estimated the damage to be possibly a few thousand dollars.

From here, he said the next step is just to clean up the mess and see what the city wanted him to do.

“The city will probably give me directions on what they want me to do. So I’ll just have to wait for them to give their blessing or non-blessing,” he said.

“I’m just glad that nobody got hurt,” he also said. “That’s the main thing.”

The cause of the collapse is unknown.
