Firefighters are planning on removing the roof of Wholesale Tire Mart and will apply foam as the next step in battling the fire, our news partners at the Journal-News report.

Morgan Twp. Fire Chief Jeff Galloway said crews have been working on mopping up chemicals that have leaked from the burning building to make sure they don’t enter a nearby creek.

The fire is “still burning real good and you can still see it from probably a long way aways,” Galloway said Wednesday morning, according to the Journal-News. “It’s going to be burning until we can get the roof off the building and down to the fires.”

Galloway added the air quality is being monitored with a large amount of smoke still pouring from the structure. However winds are favorable for firefighters and there is no danger to those nearby.

We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more.

FIRST REPORT

Fire crews are working to put out a fire burning thousands of tires at the Wholesale Tire Mart in Morgan Township.

According to our news partner at WCPO, the fire was first reported around 7 p.m., but Morgan Twp. Fire Chief Jeff Galloway said that he expected the fire to burn for much of the night.

The fire is releasing clouds of black smoke over nearby homes and roads, WCPO reported.

Galloway said that the fire department was already familiar with the tire seller. He said that since the shop stores thousands of industrial tires along with flammable chemicals, Morgan Twp. Fire conducts a safety walkthrough each year.

The fire chief said around 10:30 p.m. that crews planned to let the fire burn itself out and then douse any remaining hot spots.
