Bitter cold, severe weather: Top 5 weather events of 2018

It’s been a wild year of weather. Your Storm Center 7 team looked back at the five big weather events of 2018.

  • New year cold: The new year started on a bitter cold note. On Jan. 1 and 2, the Miami Valley dropped below zero. On Jan. 2, a record was broken at Dayton International Airport when temperatures fell to 13 below zero. This smashed the old record from 1898. But the coldest start was Germantown which got down to 18 below zero on Jan. 2
  • Spring snow storm: Several rounds of snow fell from January through March. A spring snow storm March 21 dropped anywhere from two to almost 7 inches of snow across the Miami Valley. The snowy morning commute led to dozens of slide-offs.

  • April tornadoes: Spring started with snow, quickly followed by severe weather. Two EF1 tornadoes were confirmed on April 3 after a round of severe weather tore through the Miami Valley. A barn was destroyed near Selma in Clark County. Major barn damage was then reported with a second tornado near Xenia , which was also an EF-1. That tornado was on the ground for almost nine miles.

  • Tropical storm Gordon: This was a very active hurricane season, and in the Miami Valley, we felt the effects of Hurricane Gordon. The remnants of Gordon helped to fuel a flooding rain event in the Miami Valley. Two to almost six inches of rain soaked the area.
  • Fall ice storm: November was cold across the Miami Valley. A perfect setup developed right in time for the morning commute. Freezing rain fell across the Miami Valley, coating trees, power lines, cars and sidewalks with as much as four tenths of an inch of ice. Widespread power outages were reported from falling branches and downed power lines.
