BELLEFONTAINE — Bellefontaine Mayor Ben Stahler has accused Speedway of price gauging people purchasing gas in his city and filed a complaint requesting the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to investigate.

“Once you drive to neighboring cities the price of gas is 40 percent lower in cost,” the mayor said in his complaint. “He has contacted a Speedway and spoke with the corporate office, but has only received the run around and no answers of why the cost is higher in his community, but lower in neighboring cities.”

The mayor told the attorney general’s office he has received multiple complaints from people in the community about this issue, the complaint read.

News Center 7 has contacted Speedway for its reaction to the complaint and is awaiting the company’s response.

Prices reported on GasBuddy.com show Bellefontaine currently having the cheapest gas in the city at the Valero station on South Detroit Street, where its selling for $1.38 per gallon.

About 14 miles away, in the village of Lakeview near Indian Lake, gas is selling for under $1 at several stations this morning.

Urbana is currently seeing its cheapest price at $1.19 per gallon at the Sunoco at Scioto and Finch streets.

Stahler said he would be satisfied if the price of gas would be in line with the neighboring cities prices.
