At 20, most of us feel unbreakable, and Dylan Newman of Fountain City was no exception…until he broke. When Newman dislocated his shoulder in a dirt bike accident in January 2012, a physician at the Reid Hospital emergency department manipulated the shoulder back into its socket.
In October 2012, his shoulder popped out again and the 20-year-old made another trip to the emergency room.
"The shoulder got weaker until finally it was popping out two or three times a week," Newman recalled.
Newman made an appointment with Dr. Richard Miller, a Reid orthopedic surgeon who had treated his broken ankle in high school. Dr. Miller prescribed surgery.
"I didn't start rehab until two weeks after my surgery," he said. "That whole time, I wondered if my shoulder would ever be right again, and if I'd have the chance to play basketball and race dirt bikes like I always had."
His fears were put to rest after sessions with occupational therapists at Reid's rehabilitation center, April Marlin and James Forrester. They "kept everything positive," Newman said. "(They were) really encouraging and knew how to motivate me."
Dylan eventually regained all of his range of motion and most of his strength. He happily reports that the shoulder now stays in place, even when he's lifting weights or riding his dirt bike.
Dr. Miller sees patients in Richmond, IN, Eaton, OH, and Greenville, OH. To make an appointment with Dr. Miller at any of these Reid Orthopedic Center locations, please call (877) 935-8905 or visit ReidHospital.org.
