As staff, students, and parents get ready for the upcoming school year at Centerville High School, safety is on everyone’s mind.

News Center 7′s Dontre Drexelius spoke with school superintendent John Wesney about how the district plans on going about those concerns.

He tells Drexelius that special training took place over the summer with faculty so that they know what to do in case of an emergency and they learned how to teach their students what do so that they feel safer while as school.

“We’ve spent a lot of time this summer talking about safety and security of our buildings,” said Wesney. “We have a great relationship with the city of Centerville and Washington Township and really good relationship with the Centerville police department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, with our SROs (School Resource Officers) that serve our district.”

He tells Drexelius that when it come to school security, they’ve done some training protocols like run, hide, and fight with the staff.

Wesney also says they have extra funding for safety measures and plan to have more secure doors and perimeters.

Wesney says he is excited for the upcoming school year.

“We have the opportunity this year to implement our strategic plan we worked really hard last year with our teachers, administrators, and community,” he said. “Our mission plan is really our common bond that brings our entire organization together whether you’re a bus driver, food service custodian, or classroom teacher.”

He tells Dexelius the plan is to help children continue to grow.

“It’s to empower challenge and support our learners to grow each and every day.”
