Back to School: Start dates, mask policies & virtual plans for local districts

Local districts have announced their back-to-school plans for the 2021-2022 school year.

This is self-reported by the districts, and we are relying on them for any updates to the information you see below.

This list is organized alphabetically by county, and shows all of the districts for which we have information. If school officials have information on districts not listed here, or information that has changed since this list was created, they can contact our newsroom through their standard methods, or by e-mailing WHIO at newsdesk@cmgohio.com.

AUGLAIZE COUNTY

  • St. Marys City Schools: Start date: Aug. 18 for all grades. Masks will be optional for both staff and students. They will not be providing a virtual learning option.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY:

  • Graham Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 25 for all grades. Masks will be optional it is the family’s personal preference if they choose to mask. Disposable masks will be available if they are needed. High school students have always had the opportunity to participate in an online curriculum. In the event that a student would need an alternative to in person learning, the district will work to make the necessary accommodations so that the student’s education is not interrupted.
  • Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools: Masking will be optional based on individual and family preferences. Disposable masks will be available upon request. They are asking staff, students, and families to consider their individual situations and make decisions on masking as appropriate for themselves and their families.

CLARK COUNTY

  • Springfield City Schools: Start date: Staggering start dates beginning August 18. Masks are still undecided with the hopes of a restriction free school year if able. Virtual learning will be an available to students.

DARKE COUNTY

  • Mississinawa Valley Local Schools: Start date: Sep. 1 for all ages. Masks will not be required for students or staff. There will be no virtual learning option this year.
  • Arcanum-Butler Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 31 for all students. Face masks for students and staff will be voluntary. There will not be any virtual learning options.
  • Tri-village Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 31 for all grades.
  • Versailles Schools: Start date: Aug. 30 for all students. Face masks will be voluntary for students, staff and visitors. There will be no virtual option for students.
  • Franklin Monroe Local School: Start date: Aug. 30 for all ages. Face masks will not be required and there will be no virtual learning options.

GREENE COUNTY

  • Fairborn City Schools: Plans are still being made at this time.
  • Beavercreek City Schools: Start dates: Last names A-L Aug. 16, last names M-Z is Aug.17.
  • Xenia Community Schools: Start date: Staggering start dates begin Aug. 17. Masks are optional for students. For virtual learning, the XCS Online Edge option was offered to families who wanted their student to continue learning online.

LOGAN COUNTY

  • Bellefontaine City Schools: Start date: Aug. 17 for all ages. Masks will not be required, but students and staff can wear them if they choose. They will not be offering a virtual learning option.
  • West Liberty Salem Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 31 for all students. Mask are optional for students and teachers but not required. There will be no virtual learning.
  • Benjamin Logan Local Schools: Start date: Sep. 7 for all grades. Masks are not required of students or teachers. Credit recovery for high school students is the only virtual learning option district wide.
  • Indian Lake Local Schools: First day of school: August 18. Masks are recommended, but not required, for those who have not been vaccinated. Unless health restrictions change, there will be no online learning option.

MERCER COUNTY

  • Marion Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 25 for all ages. Masks will be optional for students and staff. They will not be offering virtual learning this year.
  • Celina City Schools: Start date: Aug. 26 for all students.
  • St. Henry Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 24 for all grades. Masks will not be required of students or staff. There will be no virtual learning options.

MIAMI COUNTY

  • Troy City Schools: Start date: Aug. 18 for grades K-9; Aug. 19 for grades 10-12. Awaiting guidance from the Ohio Department of Health of the Ohio Department of Education on masks. Plans will be announced no later than Aug. 2. The Troy Online Academy is available for virtual learning.
  • Milton-Union Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 25 for all grades. Masks are encouraged but the decision will be left up to the individual students, staff, and families. A virtual learning option will be available if deemed appropriate for that student.
  • Miami East Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 25 for all students. A mask will not be required but is encouraged. A virtual option will not be available.
  • Piqua City Schools: Start date: Sept. 7 for all students. Masks are recommended but not required. A virtual option will not be available.
  • Newton Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 23 for all students. There will be no mask requirements this year. They will not offer virtual learning this year.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

  • Northmont Local Schools: Start date: Staggering start dates beginning August 12. A mask policy has not been posted, but information should be available in the coming weeks. A virtual option is not available.
  • Centerville City Schools: Start date: Aug. 18 for grades K-12 and the first day of preschool is Aug. 25. Face coverings will remain optional for PreK-12 students and staff. They are strongly encouraging unvaccinated students, staff and visitors to continue to wear masks while inside their schools. A remote learning plan is not an option at this time.
  • Huber Heights City Schools: Start date: Aug. 19 for grades 1-12 and the first day of Kindergarten is Aug. 24. Face masks are not required for students or staff. A remote learning plan will not be an option at this time.
  • Kettering City Schools: Start date: Aug.12. for all ages. Masks will not be required but are recommended for unvaccinated students and staff. The decision to not require masks is subject to change.
  • Miamisburg City Schools: Start date: Aug 16.
  • Trotwood City Schools: Start date: Aug 16.
  • Dayton Public Schools: Start date: Aug 18. for all ages. Masks are no longer required for those who have been vaccinated as of July 1, 2021. Masks are still recommended for students and staff who have not been vaccinated. Students with severe medical conditions were offered virtual learning, all other students will be in person.
  • Jefferson Twp. Public Schools: Start date: Aug 12 for all grades. All staff and students are required to wear masks while in all district buildings and on district school buses. The school will offer virtual learning options. Montgomery County Educational Service Center will provide instructions.
  • Mad River Local Schools: Start date: Sep. 7 for all students. Masks will not be required of staff or students in the district. They are partnering with the MCESC for remote learning through the county’s Remote Learning Center.

PREBLE COUNTY

  • National Trail Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 19 for grades 1-12 and Aug. 24 for Kindergarten. Masks will not be required, but strongly encouraged for non-vaccinated students. A virtual option will not be available for the 2021-2022 school year.

SHELBY COUNTY

  • Hardin-Houston Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 19 for all students. There will be no face mask required for the students or staff. The will not be offering a virtual learning option.
  • Russia Local Schools: Start date: Aug. 18 for all ages. The district will not be requiring masks this upcoming year. They will not be providing a virtual learning program.

WARREN COUNTY

  • Springboro City Schools: Start date: Aug. 17 for grades 1-12 and the first day for PreK-Kindergarten is Aug. 20. Masks will be optional for all students and staff as long as there are no changes to State/County Health Department mandates. There will be no virtual learning at this time.

WAYNE COUNTY

  • Centerville-Abington Community Schools: Start date: Aug. 9 for all ages. The students and teachers do not have to wear a mask. There will be no virtual learning options.
  • Richmond Community Schools: Start date: Aug. 11 for all students. Masks will be optional to students and teachers. Credit recovery for high school students is only virtual learning option, district wide.
  • Nettle Creek Schools: Start date: Aug. 4 for all grades. Masks will be optional to students and staff. They are not offering virtual learning at this time.
