Arrest made in deadly beating of 87-year-old in Urbana 9 years after killing

Josiah Mathews

URBANA — Urbana police have arrested a 29-year-old who was indicted Monday on charges connected to a 9-year-old homicide investigation.

Josiah Wayne Mathews, 29, of Springfield was indicted on murder, robbery and other felonies after he was accused of beating a man to death on Dorothy Moore Avenue on Oct. 25, 2011.

Louis Taylor, 87, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died several weeks later from his injuries.

“While this case is nine years old, it has always remained on our minds and in our work efforts and we have never lost sight of our duty to Mr. Taylor and his family to find justice for his killing,” Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said.

Mathews was being held in the Clark County on charges unrelated to Taylor’s homicide and has since been taken to the Tri-County Jail while he awaits his arraignment in Champaign County Common Pleas Court.
