The company is aiming to reduce instances of unauthorized parties and to protect against neighborhood disruption during certain times of the year when risks are higher, an Airbnb spokesperson said.

The company will restrict one-night bookings of entire home listings for guests without a positive account history or a prior booking on the platform. There will also be tighter restrictions for guests who try to book two or three night reservations in their local area.

The restrictions will remain in effect over the New Year’s Eve weekend in 11 countries, including the United States, the spokesperson said.

This rollout follows a successful trial last year that helped reduce incidents on and around New Year’s Eve. “We estimate that the measures have contributed to a year-over-year global drop in rates of party incidents over NYE of roughly 56 percent, since the defenses were first piloted in 2020,” the spokesperson said.

“Last year, approximately 340,000 guests globally were blocked or redirected from attempting to book on Airbnb over NYE, including more than 120,000 guests in the US,” the spokesperson stated.
