Kettering tornado sirens ‘inadvertently activated’ during training exercise Thursday

KETTERING — UPDATE @ 8:35 a.m.:

Kettering police said a training exercise “inadvertently activated” the city’s tornado sirens around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, a spokesperson for the department said in an emailed statement.

Sirens were activated for five minutes however there was no severe weather in the area.

“The siren was inadvertently activated during a training exercise at the KPD dispatch center. There was no report of severe weather in the area and the Emergency Alert System is functioning correctly,” the spokesperson said.

“(Kettering Police Department) apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the alarm.”

At 8 a.m., Miami Twp. police dispatched switched over to Kettering’s dispatch center from the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. However, the spokesperson said the switchover was not to blame for the accidental activation.

Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday many reported hearing tornado sirens in Kettering, while there was no apparent emergency.

According to dispatchers, this was a mistake due to computer issues. There were no weather emergencies at the time the sirens were activated.

A switchover will happen at 8 a.m. when Miami Twp. police dispatches will move from the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center to be handled by Kettering. It was not known if the switchover was a possible cause of the malfunction.
