AAA: Keep your vehicle well maintained as temps plummet

The Miami Valley is expecting to be in a deep freeze today and could potentially create icy conditions, so you are going to want to be prepared before you hit the road.

Car care professionals said it’s important to make sure your battery is in good shape and that there is no corrosion. Also, it’s important to remember that the tread on your tires is not dull.

News Center 7 spoke with Darryl Thompson Thursday morning who is a car care manager at AAA. He said most of the tire dealers in the area sell all-season tires.

He said all-season tires are the ideal tire for most drivers in this area.

Thompson continued by saying it’s important to keep emergency items in your car like blankets, medications, water, and a cell phone charger. He also said it’s important to stay in the car or leave it if you’re stuck on the side of the road during wintry weather.

“It really depends on the situation. Most of the time it’s going to be best for you to stay in your vehicle. However, there are some circumstances where there’s not, but most of the time, it’s safer to stay in the vehicle,” Thompson said.

He continued by saying if there are exhaust fumes or other danger inside the car, then get out of vehicle and go someplace safer.

Car care professionals stressed the importance of not using your windshield wipers at a tool to get rid of frost or show. Thompson said it damages the wiper.

For those who have to commute to and from work and for other reasons, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is well-maintained.
