Increased residential growth prompts changes for elementary schools in Miamisburg

MIAMISBURG — Several town hall meetings are planned for Miamisburg City School community members over the next several weeks to discuss changes in elementary programming.

Miamisburg City Schools have seven elementary schools with K-5 groupings, but this could soon change. These changes are due to the increased number of students within the district, according to a district spokesperson.

“We have some new residential developments coming online – we actually have a few that are already in progress, one that is almost complete. But there’s projected to be 877 new residential housing units in Miamisburg. We have not experienced this kind of growth since 2000″, said Dr. Laura Blessing, Miamisburg City Schools Superintendent.

News Center 7′s Mike Campbell spoke with Blessing this afternoon to discuss the fear of the unknown that has been circulating online throughout the Miamisburg neighborhood chat Facebook group.

Blessing said redistricting could cause a change in operations and buildings for students. “In Miamisburg, we have always had K-5 buildings. Redistricting itself is nerve-wracking”, said Blessing.

The growth of the Miamisburg community is causing the district to address the need to balance the student population between the seven different elementary schools, according to the district. Right now, some elementary schools have 200 students, while another has close to 400.

Miamisburg City Schools have planned eight town halls over the next two weeks starting Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. During the town halls, the district will share with the community three proposed models for future plans.

Blessing is asking for community input. “We really want to let the community, let our staff, let our stakeholders all be involved in saying let’s look at idea one. We have seven goals; how many goals can be met if we look at just having a kindergarten building or having seven K-5 buildings and just redistricting.” said Blessing.

Miamisburg City Schools will post each of the three models to its website under the elementary programming tab. After each town hall, the district will also post FAQs based on community members’ input from each town hall.

Once all the town halls have taken place, the Board of Education will decide on a plan. The district hopes to decide on a plan by March 1st.
