Menopause risks lessened by heart and vascular scan

Menopause is no longer stigmatized the way it was in decades past. Women today are living vital, productive, and healthy lives long after their child-bearing years are over. But with menopause comes an increased risk of certain health issues, especially cardio-vascular disease.

Officials at the Reid Hospital Heart and Vascular Center urge women over 50 to be more aware of the physical changes that accompany decreasing estrogen levels. A simple – and affordable – heart and vascular scan can help post-menopausal women understand their risks and make appropriate lifestyle changes.

The scans, at $49 -- $20 for the vascular scan and $29 for the heart scan -- cost less than a nice dinner out and take only a few minutes. They are also painless and non-invasive.

A CT coronary artery scan will measure calcium accumulation in arteries (a predictor of heart attack risk), and can spot trouble even when other tests, such as those that check cholesterol levels, are normal.
