Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced Monday that Ohio’s 37 public institutions of higher education may apply for their share of the $5 million available in the Ohio Campus Safety Grant Program.

Governor DeWine created the Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) in 2019 to assist local schools, colleges, universities and law enforcement agencies to prevent, prepare for and respond to threats within the school, according to a release from DeWine’s office.
“Ohio continues to make investments to help protect our students and staff,” Governor DeWine said. “Everyone should be able to learn in a safe, supportive environment so they can succeed both inside and outside the classroom.”
To be eligible for funding, colleges and universities must conduct a security assessment to find possible areas for improvement, the release said.
Expenses can include but are not limited to improved lighting, secure doors and security cameras at entrances to the building, according to the spokesperson.

The Campus Safety Grant Program is one of two new school safety programs launched last year by the OSSC, according to the release.
The K-12 School Safety Grant Program awarded $47 million to more than 1,000 schools last month.
