DNC 2016: Flags at convention trigger arguments

Republicans and Democrats are fighting over the American flag, particularly its use at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Republican nominee Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that there was “not one American flag on the massive stage at the Democratic National Convention until people started complaining-then a small one. Pathetic.”

Right-leaning websites, including The Gateway Pundit, went so far as to say no U.S. flags were visible inside the Wells Fargo Center, although pictures showed some individuals carrying and waving them.

Left-leaning groups, including Occupy Democrats and Media Matters, have pointed to a row of American flags on the giant stage, to the left of the speakers, but they do not specify when the flags were placed there.

Media Matters pointed out a Fox News report Tuesday afternoon that there were “a number of American flags on stage and in the backdrop.”

Besides the timing issue, some of the confusion may be linked to the huge, high-tech digital displays that both the Republican and Democratic conventions have used behind their stages. Photos from both conventions show American flag images rotating with other pictures on those displays.
