DECA picks downtown for third charter school

Dayton Early College Academy will open a third school building this fall in downtown Dayton to serve middle school students.

The new school will be located in the former Miami-Jacobs Career College building at the northeast corner of Second and Patterson.

DECA is a higher-performing charter school that currently has a 7th-to-12th grade school on the University of Dayton campus, and the DECA Prep kindergarten to sixth-grade school on Homewood Avenue.

Chief Academic Officer David Taylor said the top two grades of DECA Prep and the bottom two grades of DECA will join new students to create the middle school. The DECA schools are open to students living within the Dayton Public Schools district.

Taylor expects the overall enrollment of the DECA schools to increase from 1,000 to 1,100 or more this fall. There will be a middle school enrollment meeting at DECA Prep on Feb. 27, and the enrollment application deadline is March 4.
