Dayton Public Schools ‘off to good start’ to new year

The Miami Valley’s largest school district opened its doors this morning for the new school year.

Buses started rolling out of the lot around 5:30 a.m. today to pick up students on the first day of school for Dayton Public Schools, which is home to 14,000 students.

“We’re off to a good start,” first-year Superintendent Rhonda Corr said. “I wish we had another month to prepare, but we are off to a good start.”

Last year, Dayton Public Schools was the only local district to get an “F” rating.

But Corr said decisions made now — from Chromebooks to a mentoring program tailored to black males — are focused on a brighter future.

“We are working on changing the culture so that adults know that we really are here for kids,” Corr said.

News Center 7’s Lauren Clark is working on this story, and will have more later today.
