Warrant issued for Kettering woman suspected of driving while intoxicated, leaving scene of accident

DAYTON — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Kettering woman indicted Tuesday in connection to a June OVI hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist.

The victim is believed to be an ER doctor at Miami Valley Hospital.

Tara Lynn Herath, 22, is charged with aggravated vehicular assault and failure to stop after an accident--both felonies--and misdemeanor charges of OVI and endangering children, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report issued Tuesday. Herath’s 2-year-old daughter was in the car at the time of the accident, which occurred on June 17, 2018, on U.S. 35 in Dayton, police say.

Herath was driving a dark green 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck east on U.S. 35 when she changed lanes and collided with a motorcyclist, who was also eastbound, police say. The motorcyclist, identified as Derek L. Broering of Spring Valley, was riding a 2017 Harley-Davidson.

He "laid the motorcycle down on its right side, and slid off the right side of the road; the rider was thrown off and came to rest" in the roadway, according to a Dayton Police Department traffic crash report.

Herath allegedly did not stay at the crash scene.

She is scheduled to be arraigned on April 16, or sooner once she's in custody.
