A robbery suspect was captured Sunday evening after he spun out on I-70 during a police chase.
The suspect, whose name was not released, claimed to have a gun just before 6:30 p.m. when he stole cash from AutoZone, 6246 Brandt Pike. He then ran to the southeast through the bowling alley and towards Shady Oak, according to a news release from Huber Heights police.
Responding officers spotted a man matching the robbery suspect's description -- a black man in his 20s -- with no shirt, sweating profusely and trying to leave the area of Shady Oak in a maroon Honda with an Illinois license plate, according to the release.
The officers followed the suspect and reportedly witnessed traffic violations. They attempted to stop the vehicle at Bellefontaine and Callamere Farm roads. That's when the suspect allegedly pulled down a farm lane, made a U-turn and fled north on Bellefontaine Road, according to police.
Huber Heights police gave chase, with the pursuit taking them to westbound Interstate 70. The chase ended when the suspect lost control and spun out at the Brandt Pike exit.
Officers had guns drawn when they ordered the suspect -- who was not injured -- out of his car and took him into custody.
An undisclosed amount of cash stolen from AutoZone was recovered, according to police. Huber Heights police Lt. Matt Dulaney said no gun was found and that the suspect claimed to have a weapon but did not display one during the robbery.
The suspect was booked into the Montgomery County Jail. Dulaney said the suspect's name will not be released until charges are approved by the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office.
