Not guilty verdict in Springfield murder trial

UPDATE @ 12:20 p.m. (Feb. 17)

A Springfield man accused in a July 2015 shooting death of another man has been found not guilty of the charges he was facing.

Jerome Palmer Jr., of Springfield, was arrested just days after William “Billy” Haney was found shot dead in his front yard over the Fourth of July weekend, according to a Springfield Police Division report.

Palmer was indicted on a charges of felony murder, aggravated murder and improper use of a handgun in a motor vehicle.

After one day of testimony, including eye witnesses from the scene, a jury deliberated for less than two hours before they handed the judge their not-guilty findings on all charges.

In a related note, Anthony Haney, of Springfield, brother to the slain William Haney, made a court appearance Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.

Anthony Haney allegedly tried to attack Palmer during day one of his murder trial.

FIRST REPORT (Feb. 16)

A Clark County sheriff’s deputy had to arrest a man during day one of a murder trial.

Lt. Michael A. Young, jail administrator in Clark County, said Anthony Haney of Springfield had to be wrestled by officers after he “attempted to get to the defendant Jerome Palmer.”

Palmer is on trial for the July 2015 shooting death of William Haney.

Anthony Haney is the brother of the fatal shooting victim.

Anthony Haney faces one count of disorderly conduct.

“The judge was at recess and didn’t want to file contempt against him. The jury was also not in the room. There was no media release done on it so it did not affect the beginning of the trial,” Young said in an email.

Anthony Haney will appear in Springfield Municipal Court Wednesday.
