A Troy man who stole copper wire valued at more than $30,000 from his employer was sentenced Monday to five years of community control in Miami County Common Pleas Court.
Matthew Welty, 28, pleaded guilty in April to felony theft for stealing 7,000 pounds of copper wire along with welding equipment from ITW-Hobart Brothers. The copper wire was sold to scrap yards while the welders and welding guns, valued at around $5,000, were sold on eBay, Troy police said.
Charges are pending against a second Troy man accused in the crimes.
Judge Robert Lindeman said Welty qualified for mandatory community control. He ordered him to get a job within 60 days and pay restitution of $300 a month.
