Family recovers stolen fundraiser money for fatal beating victim

UPDATE @ 11:19 a.m. (May 23)

Stephanie Antrican-Caudill, daughter of Ronald Antrican, confirmed Monday the family was able to recover over $2,200 of the stolen fundraiser money to cover her father’s burial costs.

The theft suspect, Michael McCormick, reportedly admitted to police the theft and told them where to find the money.

The Antrican family was able to recover over $2,200 that was raised to cover their father’s burial costs. The father is being buried today in Hancock County, Tennessee.

FIRST REPORT (May 22)

Family members said a thief stole money raised during a benefit Saturday night at a local bar to pay for the funeral costs of a man who was fatally beaten last week in a home invasion.

The daughter of Ronald Antrican, the 71-year-old man who was beaten and robbed Wednesday at his home in the 3300 block of East Third Street, said the benefit at Connell’s Bar, 3105 E. Third St., raised more than $2,800.

“It was an amazing turnout for a very tragic event,” Stephanie Antrican-Caudill said.

She said her best friend’s boyfriend Michael McCormick was at the event all night long, and was caught on camera taking the money from a truck.

An employee at Connell’s Bar on Sunday night confirmed the business had surveillance video that caught the theft, but said the owner is not allowing the media to see it.

Dayton police confirmed McCormick is the suspect arrested at Connell’s Bar. The 28-year-old was booked on suspicion of felony theft into the Montgomery County Jail, online jail records show. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Dayton police Sgt. Joseph Setty said detectives are now handling the case. He could not confirm how much money was stolen but said a felony theft charge would mean more than $1,000 was taken.

A suspect in Antrican's death, 57-year-old Steven E. Westfall, was arrested Wednesday. He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on murder and parole violation charges, according to online jail records.
