Driver in deadly 2014 Shelby crash sent to prison

UPDATE @ 9:30 p.m. (Sept. 9, 2015): Carl Graber, who ran from the scene of a crash and left his girlfriend for dead, will spend the next seven years in prison.

Graber, 34, was sentenced this afternoon by Shelby County Common Pleas Judge James Stevenson in the Nov. 8, 2014, accident in the 1000 block of Lindsey Road near Sidney.

Graber was driving the truck that smashed into a tree. His passenger and girlfriend, 23-year-old Brittany Elliott, also of Sidney, died at the scene.

Graber, arrested two days after the accident, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

UPDATE @ 2:25 p.m. (Nov. 10, 2014)

Deputies arrested Carl Graber, 33, after he was seen shopping at the Walmart in Sidney. The sheriff’s office received multiple calls from customers at the store who saw a man fitting Graber’s description, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Graber was arrested at North Vandemark and West Russell roads just after 2 p.m., then taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital to be treated for head, shoulder and leg injuries. When released, Graber was booked into the Shelby County Jail.

Monday night, the Sidney resident was being detained on two felony charges: aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an injury accident. Bond was set at $15,091 cash, according to the jail website. Graber is to be in court Tuesday morning for his initial appearance.

The charges accuse him of leaving an accident on Lindsey Road on Saturday night that killed his passenger, 23-year-old Brittany Elliott of Sidney.

UPDATE @ 9 a.m. (Nov. 10):

Deputies are continuing their search for 33-year-old Carl Graber today. He is now being charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a 3rd degree felony, and vehicular homicide. A cash reward is being offered for information on his whereabouts.

Officials say the accident is still under investigation. No further criminal charges are pending a review with the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office.

UPDATE @ 7:10 p.m. (Nov. 9)

Deputies are searching for the driver of a pickup truck who fled the scene of a crash that killed his passenger, 23-year-old Brittany Elliott of Sidney.

Carl Graber, 33, of Sidney, fled the crash that happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Lindsey Road, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

A reward is offered for information leading to the capture of Graber, who is facing charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, the sheriff’s office announced Sunday.

UPDATE @6:45 a.m. (Nov. 9)

Brittany Elliott, 23, died in a crash in the 1000 block of Lindsey Road in Turtle Creek Twp. Saturday night, according to a press release.

The crash happened just before 11:30 pm. A preliminary investigation reveals that Carl Graber, 33 was driving a 2003 Ford F-150 southbound on Lindsey Road when he traveled over the CSX Railroad tracks at a high rate of speed, according to officials. The vehicle lost control and went off the west side of the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle continued out of control until it finally came to a stop on its tires just before striking a house.

Alcohol and speed are suspected factors in the crash, according to a press release. Officials say the crash is still under investigation.

FIRST REPORT (Nov. 8)

At least one person is dead after a Saturday night crash.

Crews were called around 11:30 p.m. to the 900 block of South Lindsey Road.

A CareFlight medical helicopter initially was on standby for the crash, according to dispatch reports.

The crash remains under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
