GREENVILLE — The Darke County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a jury duty scam that threatens jail for those who don’t pay.
The sheriff’s office today received reports of a telephone scam in Darke County, with the perpetrator identifying himself as Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker, the real chief deputy stated in a news release, which also was posted on social media.

Scammers typically use the name of someone from the local community they are calling to make the scam appear legitimate, Whittaker stated. The fictitious telephone number on the caller ID also often shows up as a local number. The caller will try to intimidate the victim into complying with the demands. He may try to get bank account information or ask you to wire money. When the victim refuses to comply or questions the caller, it is followed by threats of arrest.
