Kettering City Schools evacuated Van Buren Middle School on Thursday afternoon because of a bomb threat written on a bathroom wall, according to interim superintendent Christy Donnelly.
The school normally dismisses at 3:40 p.m. School officials took students to Kettering's Roush Stadium, one block away, at 2:55 p.m. Parents were notified via a recorded phone call from Donnelly, who said the threat indicated the bomb would go off at dismissal time.
District spokeswoman Kari Basson said Kettering police were checking the building for any type of explosives late Thursday afternoon.
Thursday evening, parents and guardians received an "all clear" notification and were told that school will begin at the regular time on Friday morning.
Students said school officials made a building wide announcement describing the evacuation as practice, with students learning about the written threat only when parents began to pick them up from the stadium.
A similar threat was made at Fairmont High School in Kettering last week, with no device found during a 3 ½ hour sweep by Kettering police, who used bomb detecting dogs. District officials said last week's threat and evacuation was the first of its kind in Kettering in 20 years.
Miamisburg also had bomb threats found written on bathroom walls at its high school and middle school last week, leading to the early dismissal of students. One student faces a felony charge in juvenile court stemming from the threatening message found at Miamisburg Middle School.
