Masks and social distancing must continue

WHO says “herd immunity” will not be gained this year

The vaccination rollout continues, but that won’t be enough to allow us to stop wearing masks and socially distancing any time this year, according to the World Health Organization.

Premier Health’s Regional Medical Director, Dr. Joseph Allen said that world health leaders are planning for the worst when they predicted that no changes will be made to precautionary behavior against COVID-19 this year.

“That’s absolutely the approach we need to take right now, plan for the worst, hope for the best,” Dr. Allen said.

To reach herd immunity, Dr. Allen said health leaders think that 70 to 80 percent of the population must be immunized. Once that is achieved, then officials can begin to loosen social distancing and mask wearing protocols.
