DAYTON — Winter weather not only does a number on area roadways but also on your home.
A frozen pipe is not something a homeowner ever hopes to deal with. However, it is something that homeowners should take precautions to prevent with both metal and plastic pipes.

There are a number of ways to prevent this from happening to you or worse - a pipe busting. The American Red Cross suggests the following ways to prevent this from happening in your home:
- If there are water supply lines in your garage, keep all doors closed as much as possible.
- If pipes are enclosed in a kitchen or bathroom closet, open the doors so warm air can circulate the pipes.
- Turn on all facets and allow water to slowly drip out
In extreme weather, cities can be faced with a larger pipe busting - a water main. News Center 7′s Nick Foley spoke with local officials on what you should do if you see a water main issue.

“Might be a situation where it’s county water but a city road, it’s a good idea to notify both because broken water mains result in pavement, pavement problems also,” said Paul Gruner, Montgomery County Engineer.
However, so far this winter the region hasn’t seen a consistent deep freeze that would cause these issue to happen.
