Theft victim takes back money stolen while in line at Speedway

An attempted theft at a Speedway this week was thwarted when the victim followed the suspect to the parking lot and took back $85 in cash taken from her, Dayton police said in an incident report.

The incident occurred Wednesday at the Speedway in the 100 block of East Stewart Street. Police said the suspect, a male, was a regular at the business who often spent time in the area.

A woman in line at the Speedway was holding $85 when the suspect, standing behind her, tapped her shoulder. He proceeded to take the money from her hands, then moved in front of her in the line to make a purchase.

According to the incident report, the cashier would not sell any items to him knowing the money did not belong to him. After the man could not make any purchases, he tried leaving the store. The woman blocked the doorway and demanded for her money back, according to the report.

He pushed her aside, but she followed after him into the parking lot where police said the man finally conceded, returned the money, and fled.

No arrests were made.
