Preliminary crash report released from New Carlisle plane crash

A private airplane registered to the Wright Flyers Club was substantially damaged when it crashed Aug. 11, according to a preliminary accident report from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The pilot and two passengers received minor injuries when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Andy Barnhart Memorial Airport in New Carlisle.

The accident report indicates that the pilot filed a flight plan intended for Washington, Pennsylvania, and a normal pre-flight inspection of the airplane was completed prior to takeoff.

“About 15 seconds after liftoff, the pilot felt the airplane ‘shudder’ as it began to descend,” the report said.

A witness of the crash who was also a flight instructor said he saw the airplane pitch up sharply about two to three runway lights from the departure end of the runway.

“The witness stated that he saw the airplane’s tail yaw briefly left and right before the right wing dropped and the airplane descended behind a tree line.”

After the crash, the FAA inspector found fuel leaking at the site from the damaged fuel tanks. Samples of the fuel were recovered and they reportedly did not contain any evidence of water or particulate contamination.

“The post accident examination did not reveal any anomalies that would have precluded normal engine operation during the flight,” said the preliminary report.
