Bowling Green State University permanently expels Pi Kappa Alpha in response to student’s death

BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green State University has permanently expelled the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity chapter from campus due to hazing violations, a university spokesman announced Friday.

The university launched an investigation into the organization following the death of sophomore Stone Foltz in March. Foltz died after an alleged alcohol-related hazing incident at an off-campus event.

“This expulsion is because of hazing, which is absolutely intolerable. The University’s investigation found the fraternity to be reckless with a disregard for the health and safety of our community,” BGSU spokesman Alex Solis said in the campus-wide statement.

A “deep culture of deception” was also revealed to be rooted in the organization. Solis said Pi Kappa Alpha’s culture was filled with “dishonesty and disrespect” for the Bowling Green community.

The statement said that the investigation revealed that members of the Pi Kappa Alpha “repeatedly lied” during a 2018 investigation.

Pi Kappa Alpha was also found responsible for six policy violations of the Code of Student Conduct that the university has previously charged the organization with.

“Today’s expulsion is a step forward in eradicating hazing at BGSU,” the statement said. “Local law enforcement and individual student conduct investigations are ongoing.”
