GREENVILLE — The Darke County Humane Society has taken in 53 cats and counting from a home in Greenville.
Humane Society Volunteer Robert Penrod said they got a call from a neighbor when a woman was in the hospital and would soon have to be moved to a nursing home.
“The lady did take good care of them,” Penrod said. “You could tell that it just got beyond control of what she could handle.”
Penrod added the main problem was that the cats weren’t spayed or neutered so they continued to breed which led to a much larger number of cats that now need to be cared for, many of them kittens. He believes this is the largest number of cats they’ve taken from one home.
“It kind of makes you wonder how people get in this situation,” Penrod said. “It’s something that happens, almost out of control.”
While the shelter works to find good homes for the animals the huge influx comes with a large financial burden. The timing is difficult because Darke County Humane Society has been unable to hold its biggest fundraisers because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Each of these cats will probably be checked by a veterinarian and each one will cost over 50 dollars to have first set of evaluations done.”
The shelter anticipates the cats being available for adoption the first week in July. Anyone interested in adoption should call the Darke County Humane Society at (937) 548-1009 before coming to the shelter.
