Storm survey confirm 2 EF0 tornadoes in Champaign, Miami counties during Sunday’s severe weather

National Weather Service (NWS) storm damage survey teams have confirmed two tornadoes touched down in the Miami Valley Sunday.

Storm survey teams first confirmed a tornado in Tipp City, followed by a second confirmed tornado near Christiansburg in Champaign County.

In public information statements issued Monday afternoon, the NWS confirmed both tornadoes were EF0.

The first of the two touched down at approximately 7:23 p.m. on the west side of South Tipp-Cowlesville Road in Tipp City. It was there that a detached garage had part of its roof lifted and removed. Some parts of the roof were found in fields around 200 yards away.

Storm survey teams also observed damage to trees on the east side of South Tipp-Cowlesville Road.

The tornado in Tipp City touched down for about a minute, according to the NWS. It traveled roughly 0.6 miles at 70 mph. NWS reported it “likely lifted on the west side of the road in an open field.”

In Champaign County, a tornado touched at approximately 7:35 p.m. on the east side of Christiansburg. The first sign of damage was found along South Lincoln Street where there were tree limbs down.

The survey teams noted that from the initial noted damage, the tornado “increased in intensity a little.” More extensive tree damage was found along North Lincoln Street and North Monroe Street, between Pike and East 4th Streets.

The tornado traveled roughly 0.8 miles and reached an estimated maximum wind speed of 75 mph. NWS reported it exited Christiansburg on the north side of town near South Elm Tree Road.

Storm survey teams were dispatched to multiple parts of the area, including Champaign and Miami counties, after Sunday’s weather. Tornado warnings were issued for storms in Champaign, Clinton, Miami, and Montgomery counties during Sunday’s severe weather outbreak.
