Dayton wins final home football game of season over Morehead State

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers battled the cold and snow Saturday afternoon to beat the Morehead State Eagles, 49-27, at Welcome Stadium.

The Flyers improve to 8-2 overall, 6-1 in the Pioneer Football League.

UD had over 500 yards of total offense.

Running back Jake Chisholm ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He also surpassed the 3,000 rushing yard mark for his Flyer career.

Quarterback Shane Hamm rushed for 112 yards. The Flyers had nearly 400 yards rushing.

Michael Neel also had 70 yards on the ground and two scores.

Hamm also went 12 of 18 for 118 yards and three touchdowns.

Sam Bubonics opened the scoring for UD catching a 10-yard touchdown pass to put them ahead, 6-0 but James Louis’ 72-yard touchdown run put Morehead State up, 7-6. Jake Chisholm capped a 10 play, 67-yard drive with a four-yard scoring run to give the Flyers a 12-7 1st quarter advantage.

Louis scored from 67-yards out to reclaim the lead for Morehead State, 14-12. Dayton tied it when Lukas Reynolds fumbled the punt and Jah’Dell Lee-Quay recovered it the end zone for a safety to tie the game at 14-14.

After the free kick, Chisholm ran 44 yards up the middle to the Eagle eight-yard line and Michael Neel scored two plays later to put UD ahead for good, 21-14. Nathan Hazlet added a 44-yard field goal for the Eagles to make the halftime score, 21-17, in Dayton’s favor.

Chisholm’s six-yard touchdown run helped the Flyers to a 28-20 lead after three quarters. Cade Beam caught two fourth quarter touchdown passes , five and 21-yards, to help put the game away.

It was also Senior Day for the Dayton Flyers.

Senior quarterback Ryan VanSchelven was named the winner of the 65th presentation of the Lt. Andy Zulli Memorial Trophy at halftime.

It is considered the most prestigious award in the UD football program.

VanSchelven is a civil engineering major from Roscoe, Illinois.

Dayton concludes the 2022 season at Davidson on November 19 at 1 p.m.
