DaRon Holmes’ career scoring game not enough in Dayton home loss

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers got a big scoring game from DaRon Holmes II Saturday night but it was not enough in a 74-69 loss to the George Mason Patriots at the UD Arena.

The loss snaps UD’s four-game winning streak.

Holmes scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed six rebounds but three players for George Mason scored in double figures.

Ronald Polite III had 22 points to lead the Patriots while DeVon Cooper had 16. Josh Oduro added 12 points.

UD shot just under 58% from the field, including 68% in the second half.

The Patriots also made 58% of their shots and sealed the game with four free throws in the last four seconds of the game.

The difference was the free throw line. Dayton went 16-27 from the foul line while George Mason converted on 17-23 free throws.

The Flyers fall to 19-10 overall, 11-5 in the Atlantic 10.

Dayton has two games left in the regular season and will host LaSalle Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
