Atlantic 10 moves men’s basketball tournament from Brooklyn to campus site

BROOKLYN, New York — The 2021 Atlantic 10 men’s basketball tournament will not be played in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center but will be moved to the campus of a conference member, the conference announced Thursday.

A conference spokesperson said the current COVID-19 environment forced the decision to move from the neutral site to a campus location.

The campus site has not yet been determined and is still under review by the conference with an announcement expected in the near future, the spokesperson said.

The University of Dayton Arena could certainly be a candidate to host the tournament if selected. UD Arena was the last campus site to host the tournament in 2004 before the A-10 moved the tournament to neutral sites.

At the conclusion of the Flyers’ regular season, UD Arena will not host the NCAA’s First Four this year after the decision was made to move all parts of the 2021 tournament to sites across Indiana.

Last March, UD Arena hosted the conference’s women’s basketball tournament, which is still played at campus sites. The 2021 women’s tournament will be played at Virginia Commonwealth’s Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia.

The conference plans to resume playing the men’s tournament at a neutral location in 2022 at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. The tournament returns to Brooklyn in 2023 and 2024, the conference spokesperson said.
