Dayton’s DaRon Holmes has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year

Newport News, VA — The Atlantic 10 announced its 2021-22 men’s basketball awards and University of Dayton freshmen forward DaRon Holmes II has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.

Redshirt freshmen guard Koby Brea was picked A-10 Sixth Man of the Year.

Holmes also earned second team All A-10 honors, named to the All-Rookie and All-Defensive teams. UD sophomore forward Toumani Camara was named to the A-10 All-Third Team while freshmen point guard Malachi Smith also earned All-Rookie honors.

Holmes was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week five times this season and led the Flyers in scoring at 11.9 PPG and blocked a school 71 shots. He shot over 71 percent in the floor to lead the A-10 and was fourth in the league in blocked shots per game (2.29).

Brea was one of four Dayton players to play in every game this season and came off the bench consistently, starting in only two games. He finished fifth in the Atlantic 10 in three-point shooting at 42.4 percent. In conference play, Brea averaged 9.2 PPG, made over 49 percent of his shots from the field, including just under 49 percent from beyond the arc.

Camara led the team in rebounding this season at 6.6 RPG and was the team’s second leading scorer at 10.8 PPG. In Atlantic 10 play, he scored over 11 points per game and shot over 51 percent from the field, including 46 percent from three-point range.

Smith became the team’s starting point guard in November and led UD with 167 assists. He was the team’s third leading scorer at 9.2 PPG and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ESPN Events Invitational back in November. Smith was named A-10 Rookie of the Week four times this season and averaged over four rebounds per game this season.

The Flyers’ next game will be Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship in Washington DC. They will play the winner of Thursday night’s game between the no. 7 seed George Washington vs the no. 10 seed UMass.
