Dayton knocks off Fordham at home

DAYTON — The Dayton Flyers defeated the Fordham Rams, 68-61, Tuesday night at the UD Arena. The game was originally scheduled for January 19th but was moved to the January 25th because the Atlantic 10 moved the St. Bonaventure game to January 18th.

DaRon Holmes II led UD with a double-double: 19 points and 12 rebounds while blocking three shots. Malachi Smith had 13 points while Toumani Camara scored 11. The Flyers had 18 turnovers leading to 18 Fordham points. Dayton improves to 13-7 overall, 5-2 in the Atlantic 10.

UD never trailed in this game but the Rams tied it at 9-9 on a three by Kam’ron Cunningham. Mali Smith scored six straight points to put the Flyers ahead, 15-9. Toumani Camara and Koby Brea each buried a trey to extend the advantage to 23-9, capping a 14-0 scoring run. Fordham responded by outscoring UD, 14-4, and getting within four points, 27-23. Dayton ended the first half on a pair of three-pointers by R.J. Blakney to lead, 37-25, at halftime.

UD led by as much as 14 points twice in the second half, including 51-37 on a basket by Holmes. But the Rams would not go quietly as Josh Colon Navarro made one of 12 Fordham three-pointers to cut the lead to 53-45. Smith’s trey and Holmes’ dunk put the Flyers ahead by 13 points, 63-50, with three minutes left. The Rams got within seven, 63-56, but the Flyers made five of seven free throws to seal the game.
