Chris Finke: Dayton’s “Rudy” story

Dayton, Ohio — Chris Finke is too young to remember when the movie “Rudy” came out, but the former Alter receiver can certainly relate to it. Like the guy the movie was based on, Finke was a walk-on at Notre Dame...but that’s where the similarity ends.

Finke’s career in South Bend went from walk-on, to a scholarship, to being the team captain his senior season.

“He walked on at Notre Dame, I walked on at Notre Dame, but I think we had different goals for where we wanted to end up,” Finke said. “If you’ve seen the movie his goal was to go to Notre Dame and get on the team...I was already on the team, my goal was to be a consistent contributor on the team and start and play a lot.”

Finke ended up doing just that for the Irish. He caught 90 passes the last two seasons, six of those went for touchdowns, but none of that will mean a thing when he gets to the next level.

“It’s definately very, very competitive, so going into a team’s camp I’m going to know that and I’m going to have that in my mind that I want the job as much as anybody else.”
