Amtrak derailment: Officials identify 4 killed after train hit dump truck

MENDON, Mo. — Authorities on Wednesday identified four people killed when an Amtrak passenger train struck a dump truck on a railroad crossing Monday in Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the victims as 54-year-old Billy Barton II, of Brookfield, Missouri; 58-year-old Rochelle Cook, of De Soto, Kansas; 56-year-old Kim Holsapple, of De Soto, Kansas; and 82-year-old Binh Pham, of Kansas City, Missouri.

Authorities pronounced Barton – the driver of the dump truck involved in Monday’s crash – Cook and Holsapple dead at the scene of the collision. Officials said Pham died later Monday at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

Investigators said seven of the train’s eight cars derailed around 1 p.m. Monday. Nearly 210 passengers and crew members were on the train at the time of the collision. About 150 people were taken from the scene of the crash to hospitals for treatment of injuries that ranged from minor to serious, officials said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
