People in NW Ohio say no warning sirens for tornado during recent severe weather outbreak

LUCAS COUNTY — People living in Northwestern Ohio say a tornado touched down there earlier this month but they did not hear sirens until much later.

The sirens went off in Lucas County well after the National Weather Service issued a warning and after the tornado hit, according to people living in Point Place.

A Lucas County leader said the sirens did not sound for this storm because the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning for Point Place.

“There’s going to be, I think, ample opportunity for us to look at what went right and what went wrong, and then what we need to correct,” said Lisa Sobecki, Lucas County Commissioner.

“Don’t you want to do it sooner rather than later?” A reporter asked her.

“I really would, but I’ll tell you what, I really want to make sure that our citizens have their electricity turned back on,” Sobecki answered. “If they need shelter, make sure they have shelter. If they need food, get them their food.”

Leaders said the text alert system was timelier but when people living there got the text it varied based on their phones and their carriers.
