Man shot by police after active shooter situation on I-71 in Columbus

COLUMBUS — A suspected shooter was shot by officers after an active shooter situation on I-71 in Columbus, according to police and our news partners at WBNS-TV.

Police were called to the area of northbound I-71 near Gemini Place, which is near the Polaris shopping center, Friday morning after receiving reports of a man shooting at cars along the highway, the news station reports.

Officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect with an unknown number of shots fired during the exchange. The suspect was shot by officers and was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to troopers.

WBSN-TV reported Friday evening that court records from the Delaware County Common Pleas Court identified the man as Jonathon Meyers, 21.

All officers were described as being ok however one officer was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, WBNS-TV reports. Gary Wolske, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said the officer was treated and released, and that the officer was not injured with gunshot wounds.

Multiple cars were damaged in the shooting but no witnesses or drivers were hurt by gunfire. According to police, a woman was with the suspect at the time of the shooting but she was not hurt. It was not known if she was facing any charges or was considered a suspect in the incident.

News Center 7 obtained, through a public records request, the Ohio Department of Transportation video of the shootout happening on the highway.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

All northbound I-71 lanes is shut down for the investigation near Gemini Place. Only one lane was open on the southbound side and the I-270 ramp to northbound I-71 was also closed during the incident.
