The situation started around 3 p.m. Thursday on Rich Road near Flatley Road. Scott Keegan, the Public Information Officer for the Indiana State Police said this started when the shooter -- who remained barricaded in a house until just before midnight-- shot his 42-year-old neighbor.

The neighbor was taken to Read Health Hospital and her injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Gas was deployed into the house and shortly after the suspect allegedly fired shots at the police according to Keegan.

Police exchanged gunfire and struck the suspect. Keegan tells us that’s when police established communications with him and he surrendered.

Our crews on the scene report that the suspect has been put into custody and taken to the hospital around midnight.

We also have learned that because of the roadblock, employees believed to work for Starmark Cremation Products, in the 1600 block of Rich Road, were unable to report to work until further notice. The workers were supposed to begin their shift at 9 p.m.

We will update this developing report as we learn more.
