Trump says police sometimes ‘choke’ in shootings, like golfers missing putts

On the eve of his visit to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where violence erupted after the police shooting of Jacob Blake, President Donald Trump on Monday said police officers who commit shootings are wrongly punished in the public square, comparing their mistakes to a golfer who misses a crucial putt during a tournament.

“They choke, sometimes,” the President told reporters about police officers at the White House on Monday. “They have a quarter of a second - a quarter of a second to make a decision - and sometimes they make the wrong decision.”

“So they choke sometimes, and that goes on the evening news for weeks,” Mr. Trump added.

In a later interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, the President continued with his comparison.

“They choke. Shooting the guy, shooting the guy in the back many times,” the President said. “Just like in a golf tournament. They miss a 3-foot putt.”

“But sometimes you have a cop or a police person who is a good - a good police person, right? Good. But they choke,” Mr. Trump said.

Democrats said the President’s remarks, and his interview with Fox News only raised questions about his stewardship at the White House.

“You know things are bad when Laura Ingraham has to save President Trump from saying stupid things,” tweeted Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer late on Monday night.

In the same interview, the President also suggested there was some kind of people in the ‘dark shadows’ directing Joe Biden in his campaign.

“What does that mean? That sounds like a conspiracy theory,” Ingraham quickly interjected, as the President refused to divulge any details.

The President said he would not be meeting with the family of Jacob Blake during his day in Kenosha, saying they wanted a family lawyer to attend any discussion, as the President said was unacceptable.
