Fire heavily damages roof of Vance Road business

UPDATE @ 7:42 p.m.: Crews found flames in the corner of the metal commercial building in the 2700 block of Vance Road, but the origin and cause of the fire are under investigation, Dayton Fire Capt. David Wright said.

Construction and utility workers who had equipment stored in the service facility, believed to be Personal Touch Environmental, left and returned to find the one-story structure in flames and called the fire department, Wright said.

Wright said fire crews were concerned because of a propane tank, drums of oil and lubricant and a storage tank for heating oil that were in the building. Crews were also concerned because of the threat that the roof of the building, which is of lightweight construction, might collapse.

The fire did severely compromise the roof trusses, Wright said, and a lot of the roof will have to be taken off. He did not estimate a dollar loss for damage to the building or its contents.

He said Vance Road would be closed to traffic at least until about 8 p.m.

UPDATE @6:01 p.m.: We're told that no one was inside the metal commercial structure in the 2700 block of Vance Road. Dayton fire crews remain on scene.

Police have partially reopened the road.
